Past four days I was in New York for work. The days were busy and I did not get to explore much farther than a few blocks around the hotel we stayed. This rooftop garden caught my eye from my window.
One of my favorite things when coming home from a trip is to check what has changed in my garden during the days I've been away. There were a couple of tomatoes ready for picking, one cucumber and three zucchinis. Zinnias are in full bloom. Sunflower is beaten down by a recent downpour. Mullen has wilted and has to be pulled out and daisies could use some good deadheading. How soon do you make a round in your garden after coming home from a trip?
I came home from the same trip to find that my husband had pulled out a bunch of huge hedges at the back of our yard. It looked like a small hurricane had hit only our yard, but the hedges really did have to go. We reclaimed about 10 or 15 square feet, and I think the area might have enough sun for a veggie patch next year. Mr. Diane dutifully cleaned up and bagged all the brush in the early hours of Saturday (before it got too hot to move) and then on Sunday we had a huge branch crash down to the same spot he'd just cleaned up. Sawing that up will be this coming weekend's work.
